서울 수명산의 귀룽나무/20151222(동지)

 

  동짓날이니 귀룽나무 사이로 보이는 햇살이나 담아 볼까 해서 최근에 구입한 렌즈를 끼운 6D 카메라를 들고 한 달 만에 수명산에 갔다. 카메라를 들고 수명산에 갈 때 마다 꼭 촬영하는 대상으로 참나무 4그루와 귀룽나무가 있는데 귀룽나무는 내가 이 동네에 30년이 넘도록 살면서 수명산 근린공원이 조성되기 훨씬 전부터 보아온 나무이다. 이 골짜기는 개를 많이 키워서 지날 때마다 개 짖는 소리가 유난스러웠다. 외딴집의 바깥마당에 있던 우물터를 지나면 좀 지저분한 하수가 흐르던 도랑을 따라 가다가 엉거주춤 산으로 오르는 길옆에 귀룽나무가 있었다. 지금도 우물은 보수되어 그 자리에 있고 도랑은 정비되었지만 우물에서 나오는 물이 워낙 적어서 비가 올 때나 흐른다. 덕원중학교 쪽에서 흐르는 개울도 정비되어 귀룽나무 부근부터는 관을 부설하여 아파트 단지로 들어간다. 예전의 논뚝길 수준이던 길은 넓게 정비되어 귀룽나무 밑을 지나지만 옛 모습을 짐작하는 내게는 귀룽나무 부근에서 엉거주춤한 자세로 산으로 오르던 기분은 여전하다.

 

  봄이면 가장 먼저 새파란 잎이 돋아나는 나무로만 알았지 이 나무가 귀룽나무 인줄은 2014년 봄에야 알게 되었다. 용이 꿈틀거리는 모습이라 해서 구룡나무라고도 한다는 말이 있듯이 이 귀룽나무의 한가운데에 고사목이 되었지만 승천하는 용처럼 보이던 원줄기가  있어서 보기가 좋았었는데 고사목이 된 가운데 원줄기가 잘라져 있다. 고사목이지만 가운데 원줄기가 전체적으로 멋진 수형을 이루는 중요한 요소가 아니었나 생각되어 아쉽다. 주목은 살아 천년 죽어 천년이라는 말이 있듯이 고사목도 나름 가치가 있지 않을까?
